Mastering the Science and Art of Perioperative Medicine and Pain Management
The Department of Anesthesiology at Harvard College UK provides specialised education in the principles and practices of anaesthetic care, perioperative medicine, and pain management. While not equivalent to medical doctor training, our programmes prepare healthcare professionals for advanced supportive roles in anaesthetic delivery and the management of patient physiology during surgical procedures. We develop practitioners with a strong understanding of pharmacology, physiology, and clinical monitoring, enabling them to contribute to safe and effective perioperative care.
The curriculum covers the physics and physiology of anaesthesia, pharmacology of anaesthetic agents, pain physiology, perioperative patient assessment, and anaesthetic equipment operation. Students study general, regional, and local anaesthetic techniques and their applications across surgical disciplines. The programme also addresses the management of anaesthetic emergencies, perioperative critical care, acute and chronic pain management, and the care of special patient populations. Emphasis is placed on patient safety protocols, human factors, and effective team communication.
Learning is delivered through classroom instruction, high-fidelity simulation using advanced patient manikins, and clinical observation in operating theatre environments. Exposure to clinical practice is enhanced through partnerships with healthcare settings and pain management services.
Graduates are prepared for roles such as anaesthesia assistants, perioperative practitioners, and pain management support specialists, or for further progression into medical, nursing, or allied health training pathways contributing to perioperative patient care.
