The Department of Law – Human Rights at Harvard College UK is dedicated to developing the next generation of human rights advocates, legal professionals, and policymakers. In an era marked by global challenges—including armed conflict, migration crises, discrimination, and climate injustice—our programmes provide students with the theoretical knowledge and practical skills necessary to defend and promote human rights at local, national, and international levels. We foster a critical understanding of the legal frameworks and political mechanisms that safeguard fundamental freedoms.

Students engage with international human rights law, international humanitarian law, refugee law, and regional protection systems, particularly the European Convention on Human Rights. The curriculum explores the philosophical foundations of human rights, contemporary debates on cultural relativism versus universality, and the role of non-state actors. Students also develop practical competencies in legal research, advocacy, litigation strategy, and the monitoring and reporting of human rights violations. Moot court exercises and simulation-based learning form an essential part of the programme.

Our location in London, a global centre for international organisations and non-governmental organisations, provides valuable access to internships and professional networking opportunities. Through international partnerships, students may also engage in comparative human rights studies or placements with organisations focused on humanitarian and social justice work.

Graduates pursue careers as human rights lawyers, legal officers in international organisations such as the United Nations or the Council of Europe, NGO researchers, policy advisors, and investigative journalists, contributing to the protection and advancement of human dignity worldwide.
